Growing up in Germany and Nigeria, Buki Akomolafe tells stories through fashion – marked by travel, cultures, people and encounters. Inspired by menswear and life between the two worlds, she brings together cuts, techniques and materials, such as a 'patchwork' of individual memories, to create a fashion combining the worlds. The result is a new awareness of fashion and materials from ‘foreign’, unknown cultures. Materials, colors and craft techniques identify different ways the individual dresses. African, patterned fabrics called Waxprints are amplified and modified by the quilting technique. The material is stiff and takes on a new form. The generosity of the West African cuts is combined with the classic European tailoring.
