José Augusto Amaro Handa, known as Zezão, born in São Paulo, began his quest to conquer the underworld with graffiti in Sao Paulo in the 90s. Motivated by the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Zezão believed it's his right to explore new avenues: By painting in sewerage systems or in abandoned buildings, he draws attention to a cityscape that without his art would remain ignored. Even now, for his wood collages he uses objects found in the street such as pieces of lumber used for barricades. He always leaves his trademark, his signature derived from the word "VÍCIO", meaning addiction. Art close to trash, at the margins of society – Zezão inspires dialogues between the underworld and the surface. Wherever trash (Brazilian: lixo) needs to be turned into luxury (Brazilian: luxo) – this is where Zezão's work comes into its own.
